The Collaboration

between the Academy and Philadelphia City Sail, Inc. has created an exciting program known as Schoolship. It gives students a chance for experiential learning and a real life context for learning about watersheds. Students who take part in the program use direct, hands-on scientific observation and measurement to examine aquatic ecology, geography and other features of the Delaware River watershed.

The program includes teacher training, pre- and post-trip classroom visits by program educators, and the on-the-water component itself. Students spend an entire day on a 75' schooner and visit five learning stations.
These stations offer the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in:

  • navigational skills
  • weather prediction
  • plankton sampling, ecology, and identification
  • lookout (maritime industry, watersheds, tides, wildlife watching)
  • water quality testing
