Discovery Lessons

Discovery Lessons at the Academy are designed to meet educational standards, but they are highly participatory and can be a whole lot of fun.

Watershed lessons in the Museum are educational and fun

Following are descriptions of the new watershed programs that are offered to school groups in the Museum. More information about the full range of Discovery Lessons is available here.

What's Your Watershed Address?
(recommended for grades 6 and up)

Description
Everybody lives in a watershed, but what exactly is a "watershed'? Learn about watersheds and how human activity on land affects water through the use of interactive models. Perform experiments to determine water quality while working as a team of aquatic ecologists. An introduction to the museum's new water exhibit Living Downstream is included in this class.

Outcomes
Students will gain an understanding of the "watershed" concept and the importance of watersheds to people. Students will also learn how human actions impact watersheds and water quality. Students will become acquainted with the Living Downstream exhibit.

This lesson satisfies the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic standards for Environment and Ecology in the area of Watersheds and Wetlands:

  • 4.1.7.A. Explain the role of the water cycle within a watershed.
  • 4.1.7.B. Understand the role of a watershed.

Water, Water Everywhere
(recommended for grades 3 through 5)

Description
Did you know that much of the world's fresh water is not clean enough to drink or to provide homes for aquatic organisms? Explore how water becomes polluted and examine creatures that live in water. Get your hands wet conducting experiments just like those done by Academy scientists! An introduction to the museum's new water exhibit Living Downstream is included in this class.

Outcomes
Students will gain an understanding of the "watershed" concept, will be able to name several sources of water pollution, and become acquainted with animals and plants found in aquatic environments. Students will also become acquainted with the Living Downstream exhibit,

This lesson satisfies the following Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic standards for Environment and Ecology in the area of Watersheds and Wetlands:

  • 4.1.4.C. Identify living things found in water environments.
  • 4.1.4.E. Recognize the impact of watersheds on animals and plants.
  • 4.1.7.C. Explain the effects of water on the life of organisms in a watershed.
