Media Sculpture Watershed Mural
Tough Choices Cool Science

A Multi-Sensory Experience
greets visitors as they arrive at the Academy's 19th Street entrance near the Ecology Cafe. To the casual observer, the video screens, scrolling text banner, and changing imagery that lie behind a flowing waterfall offer an interesting introduction to the subject of water. To the visitor who takes an in-depth look, however, the media sculpture offers much, much more.

Media Sculpture Shows How Human Actions Affect Water Quality

Water Quality
and how it is altered is examined through a series of scenarios that play out on the video screens. Ultimately, viewers observe how human actions affect water and impact their watershed, as well as the lives of the many organisms reliant upon rivers and streams. Clean, clear waters with thriving fish populations, for example, become sediment clogged and unhealthy for fish. Thriving recreational areas lose their appeal as trees are removed; waters are changed for the worse by what's happened on land.

The Cause
of some of the problems that are introduced in the video segments may come as a surprise. And yet all is not lost. Each storyline ends with images of people taking positive action in their watersheds, protecting their rivers, restoring their streams. The final message is one of hope:
